The Beginners Guide: What to Wear to Your First Eventing Show?

You're going to your first show! Congratulations!

As exciting as this time is, I'm sure there are plenty of nerves and plenty to remember. Below you will find my piece-by-piece outfit for your first eventing show. Be sure to always listen to your coach, as he or she may have different opinions on show turnout (the way you look) than I do!

From Head to Toe:

Helmet: You must have an ASTM/SEI helmet. This can be any helmet, though black is traditional. Two of my favorites are the Ovation Deluxe Schooler or the Charles Owen JR8 (I have the black/black sparkle!).
Ovation
Shirt (& Jacket):
At mini trials (unrecognized), you can wear a polo for all three phases. Ariat makes great ones (they run small).
At horse trials (recognized), you should wear a jacket (black) and show shirt for Dressage and Show Jumping and a sport shirt for Cross Country. Horsewear is my go-to recommended jacket and Tailored Sportsman makes a great show shirt. Asmar Equestrian is very popular for their sport shirts.
Horsewear
Belt: Belts should be classic black or brown with jackets and show shirts (check out this Tory one). Be bold when wearing a belt for cross country or mini trials - C4 Belts is the best for this!
Tory

Breeches: White should be worn with jacket and show shirt (tan can be appropriate for Beginner Novice or below). I love the Kerrits Crossover Full Seats. Any color can be worn on cross country. The Dover Riding Sport Breeches are grippy and colorful!
Riding Sport
Socks: Most riders prefer knee high boot socks like Ovation Zocks or Noble Outfitters Peddies.
Peddies
Boots: Tall boots should be worn above Beginner Novice and at any Recognized event. Ariat Heritage Contour Field Boots are my favorite. If wearing paddock boots and chaps, check out TuffRider Paddock Boots and Dublin Half Chaps.

As always, the most important piece of any outfit is a Smile! Have FUN!
